Web-Based Productivity Tools

Page history last edited by Rob De Lorenzo 2 yrs ago

Web-based productivity suites are online applications that provide free access to powerful desktop publishing tools on the web.  There are three main distinctions tbetween web-based productivity suites and classic desktop applications:

1) web-based versions are affordable as many provide free individual user licences,

2) web-based applications offer collaborative tools to share work with others or to produce documents collaboratively,

3) while desktop suites are limited to one computer; web-based suites are available anywhere with remotely saved files accessible from anywhere in the world, from any computer in the world.

Two examples of Web 2.0 productivity suites are ThinkFree and Zoho.  ThinkFree offers word processing, spreadsheet, and presentation software that looks similar to, and is compatible with the Microsoft Office suite.  Other features include direct saving to local computer without the need to export and being able to print any document in PDF format without the need of purchasing other expensive PDF writing software. A blog plug for ThinkFre viewer allows users to easily attach ThinkFree or Microsoft office documents to blog posts (for WordPress blogs).

In addition to productivity applications, Zoho has a range of free web 2.0 applications such as a wiki and synchronous chat.
